Frequency of urination often occurs as a result of urgency. The bladder muscle is over-reacting to a small amount of stretch. This sends signals to the brain to urinate even when the bladder is not full. Most of the time very little urine is passed. When you go just in case, you are reinforcing the limited holding capacity of your bladder.
As our bodies go through the normal course of life this control system can become disrupted by childbirth, hormone changes, surgery, or increased stress and anxiety. You can retrain and condition your bladder muscle to have more tolerance to stretching.
Think of when you were a child and had to hold your urine on a long car trip. You were training your bladder not to "overreact" and to stretch to hold more urine. Urinary incontinence and overactive bladder symptoms can be eliminated by this retraining.
